Legend has it that Deen’s Caribbean Restaurant has a connection to the invention of doubles, a quintessential Trinidadian street food. According to an article published in the Trinidadian Guardian, Shamaloo Deen moved to Winnipeg in the ’70s and established the Caribbean restaurant to promote his father’s culinary invention, doubles, which were only starting to become a household name on the island. As doubles grew popular throughout the Caribbean they did in Winnipeg, too. When Deen returned to Trinidad to carry on his father’s doubles legacy, he left the family recipe with the restaurant. Costing only $1, doubles are made using two (hence the name) palm-sized, fried corn fritters smothered with nutty chickpeas in a warm, turmeric-yellow sauce. Although they are tame in flavour, a little West Indies heat can be easily added with a dip in hot sauce.
The dining room is casual and welcoming, with colourful decor and exceptionally friendly staff. Regardless of the season, this familial restaurant makes you feel as though you’ve had your time in the sun.
