"Common Knowledge" by Jamelie Hassan explores themes of isolation and exclusion
Jamelie Hassan knows what it’s like to be on the outside looking in. The Ontario artist’s work focuses on cultural politics and on her upbringing as a Canadian with Arab parents. Hassan’s At the Far Edge of Words exhibit includes photos, drawings, installations and paintings, such as the watercolour “Common Knowledge” (pictured), and is on display at the University of British Columbia’s Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (to Aug. 22).—Kristina Urquhart
