In its 33rd season, the Brian Webb Dance Company welcomes celebrated choreographer Édouard Lock and his acrobatic, ever-energetic troupe of talented dancers, La La La Human Steps. For this performance, the group showcases a masterpiece of emotion entitled New Work in which Lock weaves together a magnificent story about the ending of a love—a shadow—presenting two pieces separated by era and composer. The Alberta Ballet presents this festive classic tale, set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score. With lavish set displays and hundreds of opulent costumes created by Emmy Award-winning designer Zack Brown, this performance is a visual feast to usher in the holiday spirit. For a cosy evening of traditional Christmas cheer, pay a visit to the charming historic brick mansion that is Rutherford House, once the home of Alberta’s first premier in 1911. The annual Christmas Dinner and Show includes a three course classic dinner and theatrical performance of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, which will be performed all throughout the beautifully decorated house. The internationally celebrated eight-member percussion troupe is as innovative as they come, using non-conventional percussion instruments — ranging from matchboxes to brooms to Zippo lighters — to create a dynamic, sophisticated and explosive performance fit for the whole family. The Talking Stick Festival celebrates aboriginal performance and art

While some of the world’s best athletes compete for top spot on the podium, some of the world’s best artists are flexing their creative muscles at the Cultural Olympiad 2010 (to Mar. 21). This festival features both home-grown and international talent that ranges from traditional theatre and dance to cutting-edge digital media experiences. An opera about Richard Nixon, the Talking Stick Festival (pictured), pop-star concerts and a searchlight show above English Bay are just a few of the diverse performances taking place at various venues from Vancouver to Whistler.—Leszek Apouchtine
