Hot Art: Black and White or Rainbow

Until Dec 28 The rules were simple and virtually limitess: Submit works of art that were either black and white or very colourful. So 60 artists did just that. Those varied, edgy and innovative results are displayed during Wayne Arthur Gallery’s Black or White or Very Colourful Annual Group Show. Expect to see a plethora of paintings, prints, drawings, mixed media and several three-dimensional works, including “Buffet Table,” a fibre art piece by Bev Morton (pictured). 186 Provencher Blvd, 204-477-5249.

Hot Art: Roy Arden at Monte Clark Gallery

Branching Out

Sometimes, change is good. Local contemporary photographer Roy Arden shows that to be true in Vox at Monte Clark Gallery (Nov. 24 to Jan. 7), leaving his camera behind in favour of other media. Arden tries his talented hand at paintings, sculpture and mixed-media collages (“Help the Artists!,” pictured), exploring the notion of the voice through subtle art history and pop culture references.—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Art: French Flair

Marcelle Ferron Sans Titre oil on paper 1990S 6 3/8" x 5 3/8" copyright Estate of Marcelle Ferron/SODRAC (2011)

Walk amid the work of a French master in Works on Paper at Granville Fine Art (Oct. 22 to Nov. 5). The late Quebecois artist Marcelle Ferron is best known for her stained glass pieces, but selections from her lesser-seen painting collection grace the gallery’s walls in this exhibit. Strong brushstrokes characterize her abstracts, which vary from bright to muted (“Sans Titre,” pictured in detail).—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Art: On the Block

"Homme" by Fernando Botero

Stop by Heffel Fine Art Auction House to view works featured in the online auction Fine International Art (Oct. 6 to 27). Hot-ticket items include works by Andy Warhol and Luis Feito. A selection of pieces by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, whose exaggerated subjects are instantly recognizable (“Homme,” pictured), will get you itching to raise your virtual paddle. Going once, going twice…sold!—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Art: One and Only

"Garden II" (Flowers Come and Go) by Michael Abraham

“Garden variety” is not the way you’d describe Vancouverite Michael Abraham’s oil paintings. His super-saturated, expressionistic works straddle the line between real and surreal (“Garden II [Flowers Come and Go],” pictured), making them truly one of a kind. See Abraham’s larger-than-life characters in Inspiritus at Gallery Jones Fine Arts (Oct. 5 to 29).—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Art: Rural Arts

"Watching the Men Watch the Horses" by Earl Graham.

To October 2 From a life-like painting of colony farming to stained glasswork depicting a grain elevator to stylized portraiture, the Manitoba Arts Networks’ 9th Annual Rural and Northern Art Show highlights the talented skill and diversity of work by rural Manitoba artists. Paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, stained glass and more are displayed on the 2nd floor at Pavilion Gallery Museum. The prize-winning works are selected from each region of Manitoba in six annual juried art shows. At the Conservatory, the Foyer Gallery showcases work by emerging youth artists in Manitoba. 55 Pavilion Crescent, Assiniboine Park, 927-6000.

Hot Art: Day to Night

"Coming for You" by David Wilson

As the sun slowly sets after a long day’s work, how do Vancouverites spend their downtime? This question fascinates local artist David Wilson, whose urban landscapes and dusky scenes use different light sources to explore evening activities (“Coming for You,” pictured). See Wilson’s acrylic-on-canvas pieces in his self-titled solo show at Winsor Gallery (Sep. 15 to Oct. 8).—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Dining: Creative Cafe

A painting by Sir Anthony Hopkins in a Cactus Club Cafe restaurant

It may be a restaurant, but Cactus Club Cafe’s Bentall V (Burrard St.) location could also pass for an art gallery. The chain, a hot spot for post-work cocktails and upscale casual fare designed by Iron Chef winner Rob Feenie, boasts an impressive collection of artworks, including prints by Andy Warhol and a large-scale painting (“Untitled, Oil on Canvas,” pictured) by Sir Anthony Hopkins—yes, the actor himself.—Kristina Urquhart

Hot Art: Water World

"Seaweed Near the Surface" by Veronica Plewman

The best thing about the West Coast is its proximity to the Pacific. Painters pay homage to the deep blue sea in Ocean View at Jacana Gallery (to Sep. 4). Artist Veronica Plewman gives us a look at what lies beneath in “Seaweed Near the Surface” (pictured), as she explores the relationship between the water’s surface and depths—tumultuous, like any great love story.—Kristina Urquhart
