Hot Dates: Xanadu Skates into Vancouver

What do you get when you take hit songs by Olivia Newton-John and the Electric Light Orchestra, add leg warmers and satin jumpsuits, and put the whole thing on roller skates? Xanadu (pictured), the award-winning Broadway musical based on the cult-classic 1980s movie. It rolls onto the Granville Island Stage this summer. Hot Entertainment: Circle Mirror Transformation

What’s all the hoopla at the Granville Island Stage? The 2011-2012 season kicks off with the Canadian premiere of Circle Mirror Transformation (to Oct. 22), an Obie Award–winning play by 29-year-old Annie Baker, a rising star in the American theatre world. This sharply funny but poignant comedy of secrets focuses on connections between individuals.—Sheri Radford

April Hot Date: Billy Bishop Goes to War

One of the most produced shows in Canadian theatre, this musical tells the story of the celebrated World War I flying ace. Ryan Beil portrays Billy, plus 17 other characters, accompanied only by pianist Zachary Gray. Beil is familiar to local audiences thanks to the annual Shakespeare festival Bard on the Beach, while Gray is the son of playwright John Gray. This slice of history is at the Granville Island Stage (to Apr. 17).—Sheri Radford
