Until April 30: As a member of the Nabis group of painters, Maurice Denis illustrated many books, including works by poet Paul Verlaine and novelist André Gide. 'Journeys' takes a look at a collection of lithographs and woodcuts by the artist. Until April 25: Several local collectors have lent the Gallery works by Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones. The artist had a profound influence on the Symbolist generation of the 1890s with his dreamy, mystical works. Until April 24: Montreal artist Nicolas Baier challenges conventional photography with his elaborate digital imagery. In 'Pareidolias,' the artist invites viewers to open their minds and imaginations with an exhibition of large photographic works. Until May 16: The Gallery raids its own collection of 19th-century French photographs to bring the viewer an exhibition of daguerreotypes and salted paper, albumen silver and photogravure prints. Over 100 photographs by some of the most renowned artists of the time—including Auguste Salzmann, Eugène Atget, and Gustave Le Gray—are on view. March 26 to June 20: Each year, The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts celebrate the career achievements of seven of Canada’s finest artists, including one who receives the Saidye Bronfman Award for fine crafts. May 28 to Sept. 26: An exhibition highlighting Angela Grauerholz's career over the past two decades. June 11 to Aug. 29: In 'Central European Drawings from the National Gallery of Canada,' the Gallery raids its own permanent collection to highlight the impressive compilation of 16th to 20th century art from that region. June 11 to Sept. 19: Through works by the likes of Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, and many more, 'Pop Life: Art in a Material World' explores the complex dynamic between contemporary art, marketing, and mass media. The Gallery's big summer blockbuster will elaborate on Warhol's infamous theory that "good business is the best art" and show how many of the genre's artists have used both their art and artistic persona to create personal identities and "brands." Special events: April 3: Each installment of the Canadian Art Series is a two-hour presentation that examines the development of art in Canada. $35, members $30. Call 613-998-8888 to register.
