Permanent exhibits deal with the experience of war through the ages, including battles between First Peoples, the French, and the British, the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War, peacekeeping missions, and recent conflicts. The designers of this stunning, ecologically friendly building (one of whom is Raymond Moriyama) have won the Governor General's Medal in Architecture.
Until Sept. 6: It's a development in war technology and a hot fashion item. 'Camouflage: From Battlefield to Catwalk,' showcases camo in all its forms, including designs by Andy Warhol and A.Y. Jackson, hand-painted patterns from the First World War, haute couture garments by the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Maharishi, and a Project Runway Canada contestant, and lots more.
Until Dec. 31: '1759–2009: The Battle of the Plains of Abraham': On the 250th anniversary of this battle, the museum offers a new perspective on this historic event. Nov. 11 to March 20, 2011: 'The Navy: A Century in Art,' marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian navy. A selection of paintings, from many of Canada’s leading war artists, demonstrates how geography, history, and war have shaped the navy through its first century of service.
Dec. 10 to Feb. 21, 2011: 'A Brush with War: Military Art from Korea to Afghanistan,' draws on important, yet little-known works in the Canadian War Museum’s Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, as well as other collections, to provide a striking visual presentation of the Canadian military experience from 1946 to 2008.
