Are you passionate about Toronto? Do you want to use your knowledge to encourage others to embrace our city? Are you seeking a well-rounded publishing industry experience where you’ll be exposed to all aspects of the editorial process?
Where Toronto magazine is currently seeking interns to work in its editorial department for a four-month period, four days per week. Two such positions will be available beginning in May 2013.
As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to research and write a number of articles—on topics ranging from restaurants to shopping to cultural attractions—for our monthly print publication and website. You will also be asked to assist us in myriad other ways, such as by fact checking our content, sourcing images, and even by performing occasional copy editing and proofreading duties. (Not to worry, you’ll receive thorough instruction in all of the above.) You will not be asked to pick up editors’ coffee and/or dry cleaning.
All that said, please note that our internships are unpaid.
Are You Qualified?
Ideal Where Toronto internship candidates possess a journalism degree (or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with some journalism experience) from a recognized post-secondary institution, or are working towards earning such a degree.
It is expected that applicants will have excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—as well as first-rate command of the English language and a strong sense of story. These assets should be coupled with the ability to write comfortably for both print and online platforms. Familiarity with social media tools and the WordPress content management system is also smiled upon, and although not required, an interest in and aptitude for photography would be considered advantageous.
As Where Toronto is a magazine aimed at Toronto’s visitor market, candidates will find that superior knowledge of the city—from its neighbourhoods and prevailing civic institutions to its attractions, restaurants and cultural institutions—is also a desirable trait.
How to Apply
Interested applicants are asked to submit a cover letter and resume via email to Craig Moy, Senior Editor, at cmoy@where.ca. Please indicate the position that you’re applying for in your email’s subject line.
We thank all applicants, but regret that only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
