Where Toronto brings you a new image for each day of the 2013 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, which runs throughout May with exhibitions at more than 175 venues across the city.
Today’s top Contact Photography Festival pick:
Photo: Michigan Theatre, 2004
Artist: Anthony Macri
Exhibition: From May 8 to June 22, Contact Festival-goers will find an intriguing counterpoint to Sebastião Salgado’s unspoiled visuals in the work of Toronto-based shooter Macri; his photos at Alison Milne Gallery depict landscapes that were long ago transformed by the machinations of commerce and industry, but which are now abandoned and decaying. Skeletal factories, derelict theatres, forgotten oil refineries—through Macri’s lens these monuments to obsolescence are imbued with a bleak majesty, yet their scars remain visible, marking economic strife, societal shifts and the temporal nature of all things.
