THE HYDROSTONE

1917’s Halifax Explosion (see Fort Needham Memorial Bell Tower) destroyed almost all of Halifax's North End. The reconstruction included 328 houses in the area bordered by Young, Agricola, Duffus and Gottingen streets. The houses were built from unique cement blocks known as hydrostone, and (with a design considered forward-thinking for the time) had gardens, service lanes at the rear of the properties, modern plumbing and electricity. This area, known as The Hydrostone, is still one of the city's most attractive neighbourhoods. The houses are owned privately but you can amble around the shops and restaurants of the Hydrostone Market.
