The sport of kings and queens is alive and kicking in the Lower Mainland
Hastings Racecourse & Slots, located 15 minutes outside the downtown core, features equestrian racing every weekend through mid-October. The afternoon of September 8 marks the biggest, most extravagant day of the year for local racing enthusiasts, with BC Derby/Oaks Day. Thrill to the spectacle of three-year-old thoroughbreds racing for the top prize of $150,000. With a total of $600,000 in purse money on the line, it won’t just be the horses champing at the bit and going all out. Second City took home the BC Derby prize last year in a rousing come-from-behind victory. Who will it be in 2013? Witness the pageantry of fillies, colts, geldings and mares primed and ready to race. Spectators don their Sunday best, with fedoras and fascinators being the style du jour. With the majestic North Shore mountains serving as a backdrop, Hastings Racecourse is a sure bet for a day of entertainment for novices to the sport and avid fans alike.
