Hot Shopping: Local Books Make Super Souvenirs for Kids

Gulf Islands Alphabet by Bronwyn Preece

Looking for a BC souvenir for an eager young reader? Pick up a copy of Gulf Islands Alphabet (Simply Read Books; $19.95). On each page, Bronwyn Preece cleverly uses Gulf Islands imagery to highlight one letter: “Gorgeous galleries on Gabriola are guaranteed to be worth a gander, and gallivanting on Galiano or Gambier is great fun, as is a gallop on over to Gillies Bay or going to Ganges for the day.” Another new picture book with a focus on coastal life is Gubby Builds a Boat (Harbour Publishing; $19.95). Written by former commercial fisherman Gary Kent, the story continues the amusing adventures of Gubby, a salmon fisherman on the Sunshine Coast, and explains much about boat-building in the process. At local bookstores.—Sheri Radford
