Sometimes not booking in advance pays off. If it’s not peak season and there are plenty of hotel rooms available, consider reserving only your first night. When you arrive, get the lay of the land and see a hotel in person before you stay. This also frees you up to be flexible with your schedule, in case you want to move on to destination #2 a day early or stay somewhere a day longer. And in some cases you might just get an excellent last-minute deal.
