Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, British Columbia

This region has Canada’s mildest climate, and produces some of the country’s best red wines, most Pinot Noir or Marechel Foch. Wine touring is relaxed here (as is pretty much everything) and many of the wineries are small and family-owned. Part of the fun is island hopping (though ferry schedules prevent you from doing more than two islands per day) and biking the picturesque back-country roads. Oh, and ocean views don’t hurt, either.

Wineries: More than 40; Averill Creek and Church and State are two of the most popular. Don’t miss a non-wine detour to Sea Cider Farm and Ciderhouse.
