New York Times’ “36 Hours in Quebec City” Gets it Mostly Right

Ever read a travel story about your city and wish you could add your two cents? So have we. To that end, we asked Quebec City–based Where.ca contributor Amanda Halm for an insider’s reaction to the New York Times’ recent “36 Hours in Quebec City”.

By Amanda Halm

If you had a weekend, or more precisely, 36 hours, to spend in Quebec City what would you do? The New York Times recently answered this question and, I’m happy to report, delved deeper than the usual “eat poutine” perspective.

Meet Video Host and Blogger Reb Stevenson

Reb at Sooke Harbour House on Vancouver Island

I first became acquainted with Reb’s work a couple of years ago via the quirky travel videos and stories in her Toronto Star “Sleeping Around” column (exhibit A). Her laugh-out-loud writing and off-the-cuff videos reminded me that travelling can be not only inspiring and educational, but unapologetically fun.

These days Reb is a full-time video host and blogger reporting on lifestyle topics for Postmedia Network. Her travel philosophy is evident from the title of her blog, Life Doesn’t Have to Suck. The blog started out independently but became part of the network in June.

By CANDICE WALSH

Perfectly fried fish and chips are a Newfoundland staple (Image courtesy of Ches’s Famous Fish & Chips)

You might have heard that Newfoundland has some exceptionally odd dishes. Titles like “seal flipper pie” and “fried cod tongues with scrunchions” might make you squirm in your seat. But in the past few years, the face of Newfoundland cuisine has been changing dramatically. With gourmet restaurants like Raymonds opening in St. John’s and innovative chefs like Todd Perrin staking his claim on Top Chef Canada, the Rock is quickly becoming a favourite among foodies.

River Surfing, Montreal, Quebec

Every Friday we feature an inspirational travel photo of a Canadian destination taken by one of our readers.

Photo by Pedro fait de la Photo

Why we chose it: This photo proves that surfers will catch waves wherever they can find them—on the Saint Lawrence River right in downtown Montreal, for instance. Whitewater kayakers also frequently tackle this standing wave, dubbed Habitat 67 for the adjacent famed housing complex. Kudos to the photographer on this epic action shot—and to the surfer for braving the northern waters!
