The Piikani First Nation is a small reserve in the corner of southern Alberta. In the wide-open Prairies countryside between Lethbridge and Waterton Lakes National Park, it’s no prime tourist destination, but thousands flock to it for the annual powwow.
Hundreds of powwows around the country—from Toronto’s Canadian Aboriginal Festival to the Kamloopa Pow Wow in Kamloops, BC—celebrate native heritage each year. (See Drumhop.com for a full list of powwows in Canada and the U.S.) Piikani Nation’s event, in its 55th year in 2012 and gathering August 3 to 5, has an intimate feel.
