Air Canada Strike Just in Time for March Break?

A union that represents 8,600 mechanics, baggage handlers and cargo agents at Air Canada has issued a March 12 strike notice to the airline.

The airline is working with the union, but in a CBC report, Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said that the federal government “is concerned that a strike is possible and is taking this situation very seriously.” The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Local 2323 rejected a tentative contract in February and 78 per cent of members voted to walk off the job as of 12:01 am ET on Monday, March 12, unless a new deal is reached.

Air Canada says it will continue to fly if the union strikes, but the union’s Web site warns “We are the largest unionized workforce at Air Canada, without us, it’s all grounded.”
