Having successfully run a seasonal clothing boutique in Osoyoos, British Columbia, twenty-something sisters Rio Smith and Cydney Connell along with their mom Jo Connell launched Queen Boutique, a women’s clothing store in Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood.
They named the store after the late singer and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, known for both his onstage theatrics and wild attire. His fashion motto “I dress to kill, but tastefully” fit the women’s own fashion philosophy. “You get a feeling about a certain line and just know it’ll work because we’re attracted to it,” says Smith. “I think all three of us have very good instincts. We carry what we love.”
The store features a wide selection of women’s fashions ranging from classic everyday wear to the boho chic and vintage-inspired. Much is hard-to-find international clothing and accessory brands like Sandwich, Mink Pink and its edgier sister line Evil Twin. Popular sellers include oversized ’80s sweaters, high-waisted jeans, long earthy skirts, floral-print tops as well as accessories like bags, long necklaces and scarves. Queen also carries select local accessories like Feather Drops, a collection of ultra-trendy feathered hair accessories.
The three women have also launched their own refurbished vintage clothing line as well as manufacturing studded, high-waisted rocker shorts re-created from used jeans. These should hit the store’s shelves by summer. 1109 Kensington Rd. NW.
