Weekend Round-Up, Aug 5 – 7

Finally summer in Calgary is starting to heat-up nicely and what better way to enjoy it than by getting out and about to enjoy all that is going on in the city. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Friday, August 5

Check out the man, the legend, Jerry Seinfeld as he returns to Calgary after an eight-year hiatus to perform his trademark “What’s the deal

with…?”stand-up routine that made him a star worldwide, poking fun at life’s everyday mundanities.

This is the last weekend to catch some original, uncensored and off-the-wall performances by local and international amateur talent at Calgary’s annual Fringe Festival throughout the trendy downtown neighborhood of Inglewood.

Saturday, August 6

Saturday’s forecast is hot and sunny so why not enjoy it outdoors at McMahon Stadium as you watch Calgary’s football team, the Stampeders take on the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Heritage Park is welcoming all those who love berries (who doesn’t?) during their Western Wild Berry Weekend. Stop by the Aboriginal Encampment, Livingston House, Ranch House and Rectory to see how various berries were used to create fabulous dishes and take-home recipe cards to re-create them at home.

If you’re missing Stampede and still looking for a little western action, drive south of the city to Bar U Ranch for their annual trail ride into original Bar U grazing lands. Everyone is welcome. You can ride your own horse or take a seat on a horse-drawn wagon.

If it’s a wild weekend you’re looking for, check out Amon Amarth. This melodic death metal band from Tumba, Sweden, takes their name from JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and will playing in the University of Calgary’s MacEwan Ballroom.

Sunday, August 7

This Calgary spin-off of Mardi Gras, Marda Gras, takes place Sunday afternoon and features New Orleans-themed music, street vendors, and cultural performances in the Marda Loop neighbourhood.

If you missed Jerry Seinfeld on Friday and are still looking for a good laugh, Daniel Tosh, host of the Comedy Central show Tosh.O, will have you covered. Listen and laugh as he shares his casual and sharp material with audiences young and old.
