What better way to celebrate the winter season than by sitting down to a tasty treat available only around the holidays? Forget your waistline and indulge this season with these speciality goodies available only in Calgary and only at this time of year.
1. Snowflake Misto from Higher Ground
New this year is the Snowflake Misto, a spice tea-based drink with vanilla, white chocolate and whipped cream. Many coffee shops have a gingerbread/ginger spice latte, but Higher Ground is a serious top contender for this spicy-sweet, caffeinated cup of holiday magic. They also offer an Eggnog Latte, Peppermint Mocha and a Merry Little Latte with candy cane pieces. Grab a seat by the window and watch the snow fall (or chilly Kensington-goers run through the street) and maybe dig into some delicious mac ‘n cheese for lunch, or for pure indulgence, add a slice of eggnog cheesecake.
2. Cinnamon Plum Tea at The Naked Leaf
For a guilt-free holiday treat, try this seasonal blend of organic cinnamon, hibiscus, currants and licorice root. It’s also available (as are all of Naked Leaf’s teas) in a decorative, reusable tin with designs by local Calgary artists, making it a great gift. This warm, rich tea is great on its own, with a bit of honey, or start a new festive tradition by mixing it with red wine for the perfect drink to warm up with!
3. Chocolate-Dipped Shortbread at deVille Luxury Coffee & Pastries
If you need a seasonal addition to the Nutella latte at deVille, the chocolate dipped shortbread is delectable and dippable. The latte itself is available all year round, but with the smooth, not-too-sweet taste brewed with Intelligentsia espresso, we can forgive it.
4. Rum Spice Cake Cupcakes with Eggnog Icing at Crave Cupcakes
Crave Cupcakes never plays fair when it comes to temptation. Sailor Jerry’s rum, spice and eggnog together? Sinful. Then there’s the gingerbread cupcake with vanilla icing and a little gingerbread person on top. And of course, if these don’t fit your fancy, there’s always the holiday list of bars and cookies, available in gift tins or party platters. We suggest the raspberry thumbprints and triple chocolate brownies (for obvious reasons!).
5. Eggnog Milkshakes from Peters’ Drive In
You’ve warmed up, but during the next chinook you might want to cool down—actually, you might brave the cold for these milkshakes. Peters’ Drive In offers three seasonal flavours: eggnog, gingerbread and candy cane. This is, of course, in addition to their 30 menu flavours, and you can mix up to three flavours per shake.
