The Calgary Cinematheque kicks its 2012-2013 season off with a free outdoor screening of Frederico Fellini’s 1963 classic 8½. The film will be screened in the tennis courts at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre (1320 5 Ave NW) at 9 pm on Wednesday, September 5.
Marcello Mastroianni stars as a director balancing a tumultuous science fiction production and his equally disastrous relationships with the women in his life. The plot is as chaotic as it is comedic, with deeply introspective moments. Shot in black and white and presented in Italian with English subtitles, the film is widely regarded as a masterpiece.
The Cinematheque’s 2012-2013 program focuses on post-war Italian cinema and world critics’ top Italian picks. Films will be screened bi-monthly at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington. For scheduled screenings, visit calgarycinema.org.
Before the screening, check out the Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmers’ Market, 3 pm – 7 pm. The farmers’ market runs every Wednesday until October 3. - Adele Brunnhofer
